…The Godly ancient customs have shifted
Suddenly as with Rebecca all rules bent
The apple of a mother’s eye, Jacob, lifted
God’s blessings that were for Esau meant.
Isaac blind and dying solemnly on his bed
He urged to see Esau by calling his name
Bestowed his blessings on Jacob instead
Thru’ Rebecca’s deceit he fell for the game.
And there Jacob was, confused by the act
Brought on himself his brother Esau’s wrath
Enraged of the loss that is now a done fact
Looked for Jacob tracing every possible path.
At his parent’s insistence, Jacob left Bersabee
Headed to Syria to dwell with uncle Laban
As a refuge from Esau’s wrath, so he did flee
Until he arrived to Laban’s town of Haran.
Weary ‘n tired approaching the town’s well
Customarily capped on its mouth by a rock
Accosted by three flocks of sheep lying still
Shepherd waiting for Rachel with her flock.
Behold, Rachel appeared with Laban’s herd
Jacob knew she is of his flesh and his bones
A murmurous excitement stirred his inner soul
And prompted him to roll the heavy stone.
Jacob helped water the flock in a mighty deed
Announced himself and kissed the pretty damsel
No canticle was sung but the hearts fell indeed
To love at first sight and ignited all love’s cells.
Blushing, Rachel in haste raced to her father
Breaking the news of the coming of his kinsman
Laban moved like the mist upon the moors rather
And hurried to welcome his nephew into the clan.
One month has gone and their love grew clear
Laban bargained to wages that Jacob would ask
Insofar he will serve for Rachel’s hand seven years
If it wasn’t for love why should he take the task?
The seven years passed as a comet in the night
The time is now for Laban to deliver and comply
Laban made good and performed the marriage rite
But, his real intentions were hidden from the eye.
Thru’ Zelpha the handmaid, he sneaked his daughter
Lia, the blear sighted, into Jacob’s chamber instead
Blinded by love full of excitement and laughter
Jacob went into her roving all over their wedding bed.
Alas ! With the morning sun, he realized the plight
He questioned the wisdom of Laban’s twisted mind
Laban, shielded with customs, gave the verdict right:
No younger daughter marries before the older binds.
Gladly he settled to toil for another seven years
His love for Rachel exceeded Lea cheers and jeers
Fourteen years of strife full of chagrin and tears
He finally married Rachel and made her Lea’s pier.
The marriage night was of the heaven making
Fourteen years of anguish mixed with feisty desires
Of hard toiling and waiting, of longing and aching
Finally united the couple consumed by all love fires.
Remember My dear Jacob the day I’ve met you
The gate of Heaven opened for me wide ‘n true
I see always your face reflected in the well too
As you’ve kissed me and my body to yours glued.
…The Almighty chastised Jacob opening Lia’s womb
She bore him sons: Ruben, Simeon, Levi and Juda
Rachel was barren, hers was like a fruitless tomb
Envying her sister, she offered him her maid Bala.
The race of bearing children caused a family feud
Sisters and maids competing for Jacob’s love suit
They bore sons and daughters with such a prude
That Jacob’s family was blessed with much fruit.
The time has come for Jacob to return home
He craftily presented Laban with his wages’ bill
Laban agreed to pay with the flocks that roam
And to see Jacob and his household over the hill…
